European conference "A different old age"

In recent years, general ageing of the population has duly led to an increase in the life expectancy of the disabled.

In the case of many disabling diseases, sociomedical responses (diagnosis, prevention, therapy, care) mean that the disabled person can expect a longer life of improved quality.

The disabled live longer and their families, along with the community as a whole, must ask themselves the pressing question as to what will happen to these people when their families are no longer able to guarantee them the necessary help and care.

It is estimated that in Bologna, in the coming years, more than 80% of those persons assisted by services for disabled adults will be unable to live self-sufficiently upon the death of their parents, but will require care for the rest of their lives.

This conference intends to tackle the issue by extending its view to the European scene with a comparison of the experiences and social policies implemented in other EU countries.
